Throughout the last couple of years we've heard time and time again how important it is to was your hands. But why is this so effective against bacteria, germs and viruses?

How the science works

Viruses are cells surrounded by a coat of proteins and fat provides the virus with a protective coating against water. Fats and water don’t mix well, so when washing your hands with water alone, the water runs straight over the top of the fat, and the virus.

Soap has a superpower for fighting viruses. It is made of modules with two very different ends, one end of the molecule is attracted to water, the other end attracts fat. This means that when soap comes into contact with the fatty layer of the virus, it connects itself and pulls the fat apart. The soap destroys the protective layer and exposing the virus material to the water. The water then washes away the virus material from your hands.

What if it's not possible to place a sink where you need it?

A portable sink requires no additional pipes or water outlets. It contains everything you need in one small moveable unit. Our two-man sinks have a clean water reservoir of 100 litres (22 gallons) meaning there’s no need to be economical with the water supply when hand washing. The grey waste tank holds 110 litres (24 gallons) – accommodating used water without overflowing the integral grey waste reservoir. D-tox sinks are a great stand-alone approach to fresh convenient handwashing whilst maintaining a clean water supply and wastewater collection.

Mounted on castors our portable sinks are easy to manoeuvre and contain everything you need in one place. Easy to access for water refills, and foot operated for maximum hygiene. What’s special about the 20 second hand washing rule?

Soap takes about 20 seconds to attach itself to the fat and rip it apart, hence where the 20 second hand washing rule comes from. Any less than that and the soap won’t have long enough to do it’s job.

The best part is this reaction works with any soap. It doesn’t have to be an antibacterial or specialist soap, so filling one of our pump action soap dispensers with a no-nonsense soap will do the job consistently and ensure no soap is wasted. A soap dispenser also means less cleaning up and economically, it’s good for your pocket too.
